Translation

Based on 1 p202; 2

In the name of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, I Frithwald, as is my right, grant this donation free of everything. When we give anything in charity upon the members of Christ we believe it to be profitable to our souls because we render to Him his own and bestow not ourselves.

Therefore, I Frithwald, of the Province of Surrey, Viceroy of Wulfhere - King of the Mercians, of my own will, sound mind, and entire counsel from the present day do give, grant, transfer and transcribe of my right this land to thee to increase the Monastery, which is named Ciroteseye (Cirot's Island - Chertsey), which was first constructed under King Egbert, with 200 tenancies and five holdings in a place which is called Thorpe.

I not only give this land but I confirm and deliver myself and my only son into the obedience of Erkenwald the Abbot.

The land adjoins the river which is called the Thames and consists in the whole (in this grant or in total?) of 300 tenancies . From the boundary which is called Old Ditch, that is Fullingadich - unto the boundary of another Province which is called Sunninges (the text is not altogether clear whether land on both banks is included).  Also 10 tenancies near to the port of London where ships unload upon the same river in the middle (southern?) part by the public way.

The names of the Land are Cirotesegt (Chertsey), Thorpe, Egeham, Chebeham, Getinges (Cobham), Muleses (Molesey), Wodeham, Hunewaldesham (West Weybridge).

All the way to the aforesaid boundary I give to you Erkenwald, and to the construction of your Monastery. I confirm it with its fields, woods, meadows, pastures, rivers and all other things rightly belonging thereto, to the Monastery of St. Peter, the Prince of the Apostles, of Chertsey, that thou and your successors may intercede for the remedy of my soul.

All things therefore, within the boundary of the Monastery, as they are by me given, granted, and confirmed, ye shall hold and possess, and shall have free licence for you and your successors to do whatsoever it pleaseth you with the same Lands, neither I at any time nor my heir acting contrary to this deed of my gift.

But if anyone shall attempt to violate this my gift and confirmation let him be separated from all Christian Society and be deprived of participation in the heavenly Kingdom.

In order that this charter of my gift and confirmation might remain firm, steadfast and immovable, I besought witnesses, whose names are annexed below, to subscribe themselves.

And I, Frithwald, who am the giver together with the Abbot Erkenwald, have expressed the sign of the holy Cross on account of my ignorance of letters U

Sign of the hand of Frithuric (witness) U

Sign of the hand of Ebbi (witness)   U

Sign of the hand of Ewald (witness)   U

Sign of the hand of Eadwald (witness)    U

Sign of the hand of Ceaddi (witness)     U

Similarly, Humfrid, Bishop, likewise being asked by Abbot Erkenwald,    U subscribed with his own hand.

And these are the Viceroys who have all subscribed under their signs:

Sign of the hand of Frithwald (witness)   U

Sign of the hand of Osric (witness)               U

Sign of the hand of Wighard  (witness)     U

Sign of the hand of Ethelwold  (witness)   U

And that this Donation might be firm, and confirmation steadfast, this charter was confirmed by Wulhere, King of the Mercians, for he put his hand upon the altar in the village (villa?) which is called Thamu (Thame?), and subscribed with his hand the Sign of the holy Cross.           U

These things were done near Frithwald's Village (villa?) beside the Fullingadich in March.

Chertsey and Thorpe Bounds

" This is the book of the Five Hides of Chertsey and Thorpe which Frithwald, King, gave to Christ and St. Peter, and to the Abbot Erkenwald."            Date, 675 and 889.

To see my attempt to map these bounds click here  It is interesting that the bounds do not share many common boundary marks - as might be expected if written by the Abbey.  It is more as if the bounds were individually compiled by the 'parishes'.

Spencer has commented on the authenticity of this charter.  He states that:

  • the list in Latin of the lands is appropriate to a charter of this early date.
  • 'Humfridus episcopus' seems to be Hunferth, who was bishop of Winchester from 744 to 756; and this entry has been pushed in oddly, as though at the bottom of a page, presumably to circumvent the problem that at the time of the foundation, the lands granted were in the diocese of London  (It is possible that the signature for Bishop Hunferth was slotted in at some later date - probably during his period of office - DS)
  • there is no actual evidence that the boundaries belong to the charter.  They have apparently been updated to account for real or supposed alterations to the lands (but not to account for ephemeral markers) ; (but not necessarily seventh-century) origin, and the clauses that start with 'from' are straight Middle English.
  • The sparseness of the Chobham boundary indicates a particularly early origin
  • the detail (and some of the entries!) of the Egham bounds a late one.  Several words of the Egham bounds have no Old-English equivalents.

Turner3 gives three examples of why the Egham bounds are likely to be post conquest.

  • the area is described as 15 hides - according to Domesday this is its post-conquest size
  • mention of 'Geoffrey de la Croix'; clearly a Norman name (Sir Geoffrey de Cruce appears as a witness on a deed of 1256 4 Vol 12 p lxxvii - David Stokes)
  • mention of 'menechene rude' which has been interpreted as the nun's clearing at Broomhall Priory.  Most nunneries were established in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries; it is extremely unlikely that it was in existence before the conquest

So it appears that the bounds for Chertsey and Thorpe, and Chobham in particular, are original; that for Egham a later document.

A.D. 1006 x 1011. King Ęthered to St Peter's Abbey, Chertsey; grant of privileges at a wharf near Fischuthe in London bequeathed to Chertsey Abbey by Wulfstan, the king's priest. Latin.

Hic idonei testes huius cartule inferius subsequuntur.

Ego Ęthelredus tocius Britannice induperator insule huius donacionis et confirmacionis eternam libertatem signo sancte crucis + confirmo.
Ego Ęlphegus Dorobernensis ecclesie archiepiscopus signum sancte crucis imposui +.

In nomine Domini nostri Iesu Christi saluatoris. Amen. Acta est autem prefata donacio anno dominice incarnacionis .mlxii., indictione .xv., consencientibus hiis testibus quorum uocabula infra caraxata clare patescunt. Ego Eduuardus Anglorum monarchus hoc donum agye crucis taumate roboraui +.
